Advancing Titanium Recycling with Plasma Arc Melting

The Growing Demand for Titanium Recycling

With the increasing global focus on the circular economy, industries are prioritizing sustainable recycling solutions. Titanium ingots have traditionally been produced by melting titanium sponge extracted from ore using electric resistance heat. However, at Dong-A Special Metals, we take it a step further by using Plasma Arc Melting (PAM) technology to refine titanium sponge and scrap, effectively removing internal impurities and ensuring superior material quality.


Addressing Supply Chain Challenges

The aviation industry’s rapid growth has intensified the demand for titanium materials, making supply chains increasingly challenging. In South Korea, importing titanium raw materials requires a lead time of one to three years, significantly slowing down production. Additionally, titanium scrap contains high levels of impurities, particularly from oil contamination during cutting processes. Consequently, most of this scrap has been exported at low prices, missing opportunities for domestic resource utilization.


Sustainable Titanium Ingots Production

To address these challenges, we have developed an advanced process for producing Gr.5 (Ti6Al4V) and Gr.23 (Ti6Al4V ELI) titanium ingots. Our ingots measure 230mm × 3,000mm, enabling continuous production and garnering significant interest both domestically and internationally.

Our Plasma Arc Melting (PAM) equipment is the largest in South Korea, capable of processing at least 20 kg of alloy per batch, producing 560 kg of titanium and 980 kg of nickel ingots in a single cycle. With temperatures exceeding 5000°C, our plasma torch melts high-melting-point metal scraps in a short time, enabling the production of high-quality alloy ingots.


The Future of High-Purity Metal Recycling

Once processed, these ingots are transformed into rods and wires, supplying industries worldwide. This cutting-edge refining technology also enhances the value of titanium scrap, making recycling more economically viable. Moving forward, we are prepared to process various metal alloys beyond titanium, supplying these recycled materials to meet domestic demand.
