Ti sponge

Hello! We are Dong-A Special Metals Co., Ltd., a leader in rare metal recycling. Today, we will discuss Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)—the most common and efficient method for melting titanium sponge and cobble, particularly for producing high-purity titanium ingots.

Why Use Titanium Sponge in Alloying?

Titanium sponge is widely used across various industries due to its versatility and durability. It plays a crucial role in sectors such as:

  • Aerospace & Aviation

  • Space Exploration

  • Energy & Power Plants

  • Chemical Processing

  • Marine & Civil Engineering

  • Medical & Welfare Applications

  • Hydrogen Energy

With increasing demand for high-performance materials, titanium sponge usage is expected to grow. At Dong-A Special Metals, we are committed to raising awareness of rare metal recycling and achieving a low-carbon circular economy to support ESG management goals.

How Titanium Sponge is Produced

Titanium sponge is created through a complex process where titanium tetrachloride is reduced using magnesium or sodium in a high-temperature reactor. The resulting metal sponge contains up to 99.8% titanium, with minimal impurities such as iron, oxygen, and carbon. This purified form is essential for producing aircraft components, medical implants, and other critical high-strength applications.

Popular Titanium Melting Methods

The four primary methods for melting titanium sponge and cobble into ingots include:

  1. Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) – The most commonly used method, ideal for pure titanium production.

  2. Induction Skull Melting (ISM) – Provides better alloying flexibility and faster production rates.

  3. Electron Beam Melting (EBM) – Utilizes an electron beam for high-quality alloy production.

  4. Plasma Arc Melting (PAM) – Uses a plasma torch for superior alloy ingot production with controlled atmospheric conditions.

Among these, VAR is the most widely used method due to its efficiency and ability to refine impurities from titanium sponge and cobble.

Step-by-Step Process of Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)

  1. Raw Material Preparation: Titanium sponge and cobble are sorted, mixed, and compressed into compacted electrodes.

  2. Electrode Formation: The compacts are welded into electrode shapes for the VAR furnace.

  3. Melting Process: The VAR furnace melts the titanium electrodes, producing a titanium ingot.

  4. Refinement: This process is repeated two or three times to manufacture high-purity titanium ingots.

This refining process significantly enhances the value of titanium scrap, which often contains impurities from machining and cutting operations, such as oil stains. Instead of exporting titanium scrap at low prices, our goal is to recycle and repurpose these materials within the domestic industry.

Dong-A Special Metals' Contribution to Sustainable Titanium Production

By utilizing titanium sponge and recycled titanium scrap, Dong-A Special Metals supplies materials to domestic and international steelmakers and various research institutes. Our efforts contribute to resource circulation, carbon neutrality, and a sustainable rare metal industry.
