Introduction to Titanium Cobble

Hello, we are Dong-A Special Metals, a company specializing in recycling rare metal scraps to localize materials essential for the 4th industrial revolution. As the demand for titanium localization continues to grow, we recycle titanium sponge—a critical material for high-strength steel production—and titanium cobble, an alternative material made from titanium scrap. These materials are supplied to domestic and international steelmakers as well as various research institutes.


What is Titanium Cobble?

Titanium cobble is a recycled titanium product engineered to closely match the purity of titanium sponge. It is physically processed from titanium scrap, making it a viable substitute with similar shape, size, and application to titanium sponge.


How Titanium Cobble is Manufactured

We manufacture titanium cobble by processing titanium scrap in a specialized cobble machine. Globally, only five or six companies produce titanium cobble, with Dong-A Special Metals and a few companies in Japan leading its production in Asia.


Titanium Cobble Grades and Specifications

Titanium cobble is classified based on the type of scrap used, following titanium sponge grading standards. The most common grade is Ti Gr.1, which is ideal for recycling due to its high purity and usability.

Titanium Scrap Recycling and Production of Titanium Ingots

Recycling titanium scrap began in the United States, and we are proud to be the only company in Korea engaged in this essential process. We ensure that scrap materials are properly sorted, analyzed, and surface-treated before recycling.


Titanium Ingot Production Methods

The following four melting processes are commonly used for titanium ingot production:

  • VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting): The most common method for pure titanium production.

  • ISM (Induction Skull Melting): Ideal for alloying and precision casting with faster production rates.

  • EBM (Electron Beam Melting): Produces high-quality alloy ingots but is difficult to control.

  • PAM (Plasma Arc Melting): Uses a plasma torch, enabling controlled high-purity alloy production.


Among these, titanium sponge and titanium cobble are the most widely used materials for melting, with Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) being the preferred method for manufacturing pure titanium ingots.
