ZIRLO's Role in Enhancing Nuclear Fuel Efficiency and Safety

Dong-A Specialty Metals Co. is proud to introduce ZIRLO, a zirconium-based low-alloy material developed specifically for the nuclear energy industry. ZIRLO, short for Zirconium Low Oxygen, is a next-generation nuclear fuel cladding material engineered to outperform traditional Zircaloy-based alloys in both mechanical and chemical performance.

ZIRLO is primarily composed of zirconium (Zr) with minor additions of tin (Sn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), and controlled levels of oxygen (O). This advanced composition delivers superior high-temperature corrosion resistance and mechanical stability, especially at reactor operating temperatures of 300–400°C.


Performance Advantages and Nuclear Applications

ZIRLO cladding tubes are widely used in pressurized water reactors (PWRs) as the outer barrier of nuclear fuel rods. These tubes prevent direct contact between fuel pellets and coolant, ensuring both structural integrity and reactor safety.

Key advantages include:

- Reduced hydrogen embrittlement compared to Zircaloy-4

- Longer fuel replacement cycles and lower power plant operating costs

- Excellent neutron transparency, enabling efficient fission without compromising thermal conductivity

- Improved oxidation resistance for long-term structural reliability

These properties support higher fuel burnup rates and greater thermal efficiency in modern nuclear reactors.


Advanced Variants and the Importance of Recycling

In response to growing nuclear safety and performance standards, enhanced versions such as Optimized ZIRLO and Advanced ZIRLO have been developed. These newer materials further improve corrosion resistance and reduce hydrogen absorption.

Importantly, ZIRLO alloys can be recycled. During nuclear fuel dismantling, cladding tubes made of ZIRLO are separated and treated using high-temperature oxidation to enable metal recovery. This process conserves rare metals, reduces radioactive waste, and supports the circular economy in the nuclear sector.

As global demand for nuclear decommissioning and fuel reprocessing increases, the recycling of high-value cladding materials like ZIRLO becomes vital.
