What Is Zircaloy-4?
Zircaloy-4 is a nuclear-grade zirconium alloy, primarily composed of zirconium (Zr), with small additions of tin (Sn), iron (Fe), and chromium (Cr). It is the most widely used zirconium alloy in the nuclear power industry, particularly for fuel rod cladding.
Traditionally, it is processed via rolling or extrusion from ingots, but powder-based technologies are now enabling more precise and cost-effective production methods.
Applications of Powder-Based Zircaloy-4 Rods
Our powder-based Zircaloy-4 rods are ideal for:
- Nuclear fuel cladding tubes

Compared to conventional rolled rods, powder-based rods offer:

Advanced Melting Using Induction Skull Melting (ISM)
To meet the strict quality standards of the nuclear industry, we use the Induction Skull Melting (ISM) method to melt Zircaloy-4. ISM offers several advantages:
- No crucible contamination, as it forms a solid skull to contain the melt
- Reduces risk of oxide and carbide formation
- Superior purity control, especially for highly reactive metals like zirconium
Compared to Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR), ISM ensures more uniform internal structure and surface quality.
Supporting a Circular Economy with Zirconium Scrap Recycling
Zircaloy-4 is difficult to recover from spent nuclear fuel, but zirconium machining scrap can be remelted and reused for:
- New fuel cladding tubes
- Reactor structural components
This process supports resource circularity, reduces waste, and promotes carbon-neutral material cycles.
