Hastelloy-X (UNS N06002) is a nickel-based superalloy engineered to perform in extreme high-temperature environments. Its composition includes nickel (Ni) as the base, with key alloying elements such as chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), molybdenum (Mo), and cobalt (Co). Designed originally for aviation and gas turbines, Hastelloy-X is now used across industries that require superior heat resistance and corrosion protection.


Key Features and Alloy Composition

Hastelloy-X exhibits exceptional performance at temperatures between 800°C and 1100°C, thanks to:

- High-temperature oxidation resistance

- Excellent creep resistance

- Structural stability after welding and heat exposure

The alloy has a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. Molybdenum and cobalt improve high-temperature strength, while chromium enhances resistance to oxidation and flue gas corrosion. It maintains microstructural integrity even after extended thermal exposure and welding.


High-Temperature Performance

Hastelloy-X resists oxidation in atmospheres up to 1175°C, making it ideal for:

- Combustion chambers of gas turbines and jet engines

- Space launch vehicle components exposed to combustion gases

- Systems involving sulfur compounds and flue gases

This durability also extends to high-temperature chemical processing and waste heat recovery boilers.

Machinability and Manufacturing

Due to its high hardness and strength, Hastelloy-X is challenging to machine. Key machining guidelines include:

- Low cutting speeds with high-feed strategies

- Use of heat-resistant cutting tools

- Application of suitable cooling fluids

Vacuum melting processes like VIM (Vacuum Induction Melting) and VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) are used to minimize impurities and enhance microstructural uniformity.


Recycling and the Circular Economy

Hastelloy-X contains high-value elements—nickel, molybdenum, and cobalt—making it economically viable to recycle. Post-consumer scrap is refined and remelted into:

- Premium-grade ingots

- High-purity metal powders

These recycled materials are used in aerospace and next-generation energy systems, supporting carbon neutrality and sustainable resource circulation.
