Dong-A Specialty Metals has introduced advanced equipment to produce titanium ingots by utilizing scrap materials. The company is actively purchasing titanium scrap, particularly focusing on pure titanium. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Dong-A Specialty Metals is implementing full-scale mass production by securing large quantities of pure titanium scrap.


Pure Titanium Grades and Characteristics

Pure titanium is classified into four grades—Gr1, Gr2, Gr3, and Gr4—based on strength. It consists of 99% or higher titanium content without added alloying elements. Pure titanium is produced using refined titanium raw materials and exhibits the following properties:

  • Density: 4.507 g/cm³

  • Melting Point: 1688°C

  • Structure: Hexagonal close-packed (HCP) above 882.5°C

  • Strength & Durability: Low strength but high plasticity and corrosion resistance

  • Machinability: Good pressure-processing performance but low machinability

  • Heat Sensitivity: Requires argon for heating and welding to prevent combustion in nitrogen


Due to its high cost, titanium applications remain limited. However, Dong-A Specialty Metals is addressing this issue by developing an innovative titanium recycling process that promotes a sustainable material cycle.


The Growing Demand for Titanium CP Scrap

Titanium CP (Commercially Pure) scrap plays a vital role in producing titanium sponge substitutes. While titanium scrap recycling is already common overseas, Dong-A Specialty Metals is the only company in Korea specializing in this process. The company actively collaborates with domestic and international trading partners to procure CP-grade titanium scrap.

Pure titanium is essential for industries driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including aerospace, defense, medical devices, shipbuilding, electric vehicles, heat exchangers, and hydrogen power generation. With the expanding applications of titanium, the demand for CP titanium scrap is expected to rise significantly.


Titanium Tube Scrap and Its Applications

Titanium tube scrap, primarily in Gr1 and Gr2 grades, is a crucial raw material for producing titanium sponge substitutes. In Korea, titanium sponge is widely used as an alloying material, and the introduction of recycled sponge substitutes offers multiple advantages:

  • Cost-Effective: More affordable than titanium sponge

  • Safety: Lower fire hazard risk

  • Ease of Handling: Improved material properties for efficient processing
