President Trump's tariff policies, including duties on steel and aluminum, have led to retaliatory measures from China, the EU, and others. These have disrupted supply chains and raised costs for U.S. companies reliant on imported raw materials.

Amid these global shifts, Dong-A Special Metals is building a sustainable business model by localizing the production of titanium ingots from scrap. Our innovative dry recycling method significantly reduces carbon emissions. We continue to supply both domestic and overseas steelmakers with high-purity materials such as 'Cobble' and 'Puck,' equivalent to titanium sponge.


Titanium Scrap Recycling Technology and Industrial Demand

Titanium has become an essential material across aerospace, medical, and hydrogen sectors due to its strength and corrosion resistance. Despite being 60% lighter than iron and 1.6 times heavier than aluminum, titanium offers outstanding performance. Yet, due to its high price, wide adoption has been limited.

In aircraft production, only 5% of titanium input becomes final parts; 95% becomes scrap. This poses a recycling challenge due to contamination during machining. Dong-A Special Metals addresses this issue by recycling titanium scrap into sponge-grade material for reuse.

Our titanium sponge production involves reducing titanium tetrachloride using magnesium or sodium at high temperatures. The result is 99.8% pure titanium with minimal impurities, ideal for aircraft, implants, chemical plants, and energy sectors.


Toward a Circular Economy and Sustainable Steelmaking

In Korea, steelmakers like K-I Steel are shifting to electric furnaces and greener methods, aiming for hydrogen-based steel production. With this industry-wide transition, rare metal recycling plays a crucial role.
