In response to U.S. President Trump's plan to raise tariffs on Chinese goods by up to 145%, China has retaliated by restricting rare earth exports. These materials are critical to the U.S. defense industry, particularly in the development of next-generation fighter jets.

Among the affected materials are seven heavy rare earth elements: samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium. These are essential for high-temperature coatings, radar systems, and stealth aircraft turbine blades. They are also used alongside structural metals like titanium, tungsten, and niobium to boost heat resistance and mechanical performance.

Rare earth elements also support vital industries such as electric vehicles and semiconductor manufacturing. With China tightening its export licenses, major supply chain disruptions are expected worldwide.
