Titanium Scrap |
Hello, this is Dong-A Special Metals Co., Ltd. As discussed in our previous articles, the production of titanium and nickel-based super alloys emits a significant amount of carbon. While companies in the United States and Japan actively recycle these materials, Korea has yet to establish a strong recycling infrastructure, except for our company. Most of these valuable materials are still being exported overseas instead of being repurposed domestically.
At Dong-A Special Metals, we recognize the urgent need for decarbonization and are committed to developing recycling technologies for rare metals, including titanium, nickel, zirconium, iridium, palladium, and niobium.
The Need for Titanium Recycling
Titanium is the fourth most abundant structural metal after aluminum, iron, and magnesium. However, due to its complex smelting process, it is classified as a rare metal. Traditional titanium production is highly energy-intensive, making recycling a key solution for reducing both energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Manufacturing titanium ingots from scrap can cut energy use and carbon emissions by up to 95%. However, the presence of impurities like iron and oxygen makes recycling titanium particularly challenging. Generally, high-quality titanium scrap is remelted and mixed with titanium sponge, while low-quality scrap is processed into ferro-titanium for the steel industry.
Growing Demand for Titanium
Titanium plays a crucial role in steel, medical, aviation, and aerospace industries. Its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, high-temperature adaptability, and biocompatibility make it indispensable in modern applications. With global demand increasing, sustainable recycling solutions are more important than ever.
The Complex Titanium Production Process
Titanium metal is traditionally produced via the Kroll process, which involves:
- Chlorination of high-grade rutile ore (TiO2)
- Reduction to titanium sponge
- Further melting and machining
During this process, oxygen content increases, impacting the final material properties. Additionally, off-grade sponge titanium with high iron (Fe) content is often used as an additive or deoxidizer in steelmaking. In the aerospace industry, a significant portion of raw titanium is generated as scrap during machining.
Challenges in Titanium Recycling
Despite its excellent properties, titanium has high production costs due to its high melting point, reactivity, and machining difficulty. Scrap titanium often contains increased levels of oxygen, which can impact its mechanical properties. This is why Dong-A Special Metals is investing in advanced recycling technology to improve scrap quality and usability.
The Future of Green Steel and Metal Recycling
To achieve true carbon neutrality, we need more than just electric-powered steel mills—we need green steel that starts with sustainable materials. Leading nations like the U.S. and Japan already utilize a 7:3 ratio of recycled steel, significantly reducing environmental impact. Korea must also embrace metal recycling as a national priority.
At Dong-A Special Metals, we believe that all industries should participate in the recycling movement. Our goal is to expand rare metal recycling in Korea and encourage steelmakers to integrate recycled materials into their production processes.
Join Us in Promoting Metal Recycling
We are currently supplying recycled titanium and nickel alloys to domestic and international companies. As leaders in rare metal recycling, we are committed to building a more sustainable future for Korea’s steel and alloy industries.
We invite all steelmakers, manufacturers, and industry partners to join us in promoting recycled materials and reducing reliance on raw metal extraction. If you are interested in collaborating or learning more about our recycling process, please contact us using the details below.
Thank you for your support in making Korea a leader in rare metal recycling!
