Superior Properties of Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) Ingots

Ti-6Al-4V ELI, also known as Grade 23 titanium alloy, is a premium variant of Grade 5 titanium. The “ELI” stands for Extra Low Interstitial, meaning the alloy has reduced levels of oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen. This reduction improves toughness and ductility, even in cryogenic environments.

Grade 23 maintains nearly the same chemical composition as Grade 5. However, its enhanced toughness, fatigue strength, and crack resistance make it ideal for aerospace and medical applications. With a specific gravity of 4.43 g/cm³, it combines lightweight properties with high strength. The alloy boasts a yield strength of at least 795 MPa and tensile strength above 860 MPa, while elongation exceeds 10%. Its oxygen content, capped at 0.13%, enhances fracture toughness and minimizes crack propagation.

This alloy also offers excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, making it reliable in harsh environments like seawater, salt spray, and body fluids. These properties make it suitable for medical implants such as artificial joints and dental screws.


Precision Melting and Processing Techniques for Grade 23 Ingots

Ti-6Al-4V ELI is typically produced in ingot form before further processing into bar, sheet, or powder. The ingot stage is critical for ensuring homogeneity and low impurity levels. To achieve this, manufacturers use precision melting techniques like vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electron beam melting (EBM). These methods reduce oxygen, iron, and carbon levels more effectively than standard melting processes.

Grade 23 ingots serve as the foundation for forging and rolling into high-performance components. Quality control at this stage directly affects machining performance and long-term part durability.
