Hastelloy C-276, also known as Alloy C-276, is a nickel-based superalloy known for its outstanding corrosion resistance and thermal stability. Composed of approximately 57% nickel (Ni), 16% molybdenum (Mo), 16% chromium (Cr), 5% iron (Fe), and 4–5% tungsten (W), this alloy also contains trace elements like cobalt, manganese, and vanadium.
Its chemical makeup allows it to resist aggressive chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, chlorine gas, and acidic waste solutions. Due to this, Hastelloy C-276 is widely used in chemical plants, marine systems, environmental protection equipment, and pharmaceutical applications. Common components made from C-276 include heat exchangers, valves, pumps, piping systems, and reaction tanks.
Strategic Recycling Value and Global Demand
As Hastelloy C-276 is composed of strategic metals—nickel, molybdenum, and tungsten—it holds high recycling value. Machining scrap and decommissioned equipment made from C-276 can be efficiently reprocessed into new high-purity alloys. This recycling process reduces raw material costs and supports environmental sustainability.
Nickel-based alloys like Hastelloy C-276 also help reduce disposal costs, which are typically high due to their specialized nature. In today’s manufacturing landscape, intensified environmental regulations and carbon-neutral policies are pushing industries to prioritize alloy scrap recovery and circular reuse.
C-276 competes with alloys like Hastelloy C-22 and Inconel 625. While C-22 performs well in oxidizing environments, C-276 offers superior resistance to reducing media. In contrast, Inconel 625 provides better high-temperature strength but has lower resistance to chlorides. This makes C-276 the preferred "all-around" corrosion-resistant alloy in complex industrial environments.
Countries like South Korea are investing in recycling technology and raw material localization to reduce reliance on imports.
