Catalysts of Change: The Role of PGMs in Energy and Industry

Hello. This is Dong-A Special Metals Co. Today, we explore the strategic importance of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs)—a family of six rare metals: platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), ruthenium (Ru), and osmium (Os). Their scarcity and exceptional catalytic properties have made them essential to the global economy.

PGMs are classified as strategic minerals. Their global supply is concentrated in just a few countries, primarily South Africa and Russia, both of which face political and environmental risks. Refining PGMs also requires significant energy and cost, making stable sourcing and efficient recycling crucial for supply chain resilience.

The Hydrogen Economy Fuels PGM Demand

As hydrogen emerges as a clean energy solution, PGMs are becoming central to hydrogen-based technologies. Platinum and iridium are essential catalysts in fuel cells, water electrolysis systems, and hydrogen production devices. These metals offer high heat resistance, strong corrosion resistance, and stability in electrochemical environments—properties that are difficult to replicate.

PGMs initially gained prominence for their role in automotive catalytic converters to reduce emissions. Now, they are widely used in sectors including electronics, semiconductors, medical devices, and petrochemicals. With global efforts to strengthen emissions regulations and invest in hydrogen infrastructure, PGM demand is projected to grow at an annual rate of 5–7%.

Strategic Recycling and Korea’s Supply Chain Response

Despite rising demand, PGM supply chains remain unstable. South Korea imports over 90% of its PGMs. In response, the Korean government has designated PGMs as strategic minerals and is expanding public-private partnerships to build a stable, domestic supply base.

Recycling has emerged as the most economical and sustainable way to secure these precious metals. Industries are investing in technologies to recover PGMs from spent catalysts, electronic waste, and chemical byproducts. Recovery methods include wet refining, dry smelting, and nanocatalytic separation.

Korean institutions like KIST and KIMS are leading in catalytic regeneration and fine particle recovery technologies. These innovations align with the national goal of improving resource circulation and reducing reliance on imports.

At Dong-A Special Metals, we support the domestic shift toward PGM recycling. As demand grows, we continue to invest in rare metal recovery, enabling sustainability and material independence in the hydrogen era.
