Nickel Alloy

New Fuel Era Demands Advanced Corrosion-Resistant Materials

As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) tightens environmental regulations, the global shipbuilding industry is rapidly shifting from traditional heavy fuel oil to low- or zero-carbon fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and hydrogen. These alternative fuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions during combustion. However, they often pose serious corrosion risks during storage and handling.

Because of these risks, conventional carbon steel and standard stainless steel are no longer suitable for marine fuel systems. Instead, nickel-based alloys are emerging as essential structural materials thanks to their exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical strength under harsh conditions.

Nickel Alloys Optimized for LNG and Ammonia Environments

LNG (liquefied natural gas) must be stored at cryogenic temperatures as low as minus 162°C. During storage and vapor control, corrosive agents such as condensate, chloride ions, and hydrogen sulfide can form. To withstand this, alloys like Inconel 625 and Hastelloy C-22 are used in pumps, valves, and heat exchangers. These materials offer both low-temperature toughness and resistance to seawater and acidic gas, reducing maintenance and improving durability.

Ammonia, a carbon-free fuel, is also gaining momentum. Despite its advantages, it is toxic, corrosive, and prone to leakage. In wet marine environments, ammonia reacts with metals, causing crevice corrosion. To combat this, nickel-molybdenum alloys are applied in marine piping, valves, and joint components. Alloys like Hastelloy B-2 and B-3, which contain over 65% nickel and 20–30% molybdenum, provide outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking and chemical attacks.

These alloys are now being adopted in ammonia storage tanks, gas injection nozzles, and similar high-risk areas. Their performance ensures long-term safety and reliability under challenging fuel storage conditions.

Toward a Sustainable Alloy Supply Chain in Korea

Both nickel and molybdenum are classified as strategic metals with high price volatility and supply risk. As eco-friendly ship production grows, the industry is turning to recycling and recovery to secure stable supplies of alloy materials. Technologies such as high-purity scrap recovery, secondary refining, and low-carbon remanufacturing are crucial for sustainable growth.

Dong-A Special Metals is leading this transition by offering collection and refining technologies for nickel-based alloy scrap. This supports both supply chain stability and low-emission production.

Despite Korea’s leadership in LNG carriers and ammonia-powered ships, most corrosion-resistant alloys are still imported. Localizing the production of nickel-molybdenum alloys is now essential. Enhancing material independence, recycling systems, and domestic alloy development will increase Korea’s global competitiveness.

Dong-A Special Metals is actively contributing to this transformation by developing, analyzing, and recycling rare-metal-based alloys. Through innovation and resource circulation, the company is supporting the growth of a high-value, eco-friendly shipbuilding industry.
