In this purchase, we purchased titanium scrap to make titanium sponge substitutes. Titanium sponge is widely used in steelmaking companies such as POSCO and Hyundai Steel. It is a raw material that is entirely imported from overseas. Recently, a large-scale titanium mine was discovered in Gangwon Province, and the entire country is excited about the prospect of extracting titanium in Korea.

However, even if it is extracted from the ore, it is expected to be very difficult to use domestically because domestic steelmakers are using cheaper Russian or Chinese titanium. It is ironic that we are using titanium sponges from a warring country because Russia, the world's third largest titanium producer, is selling it cheaply through neighboring countries because its export routes are blocked due to the war, and the raw material is not labeled, so ordinary companies do not know.

As a result, overseas companies are actively promoting the use of recycled materials. This is because we can't use titanium sponges from warring countries. So, while everyone is screaming ESG, we need to think about it seriously. It is not enough to say that we are doing ESG management, but only the practice of using recycled materials and not using materials from warring countries will be true ESG management. I hope that domestic steelmakers will enter the path of true ESG management through the use of recycled titanium materials.
