European Demand Surges for High-Strength Armor Plates and Strategic Alloys
As the war in Ukraine drags on and NATO strengthens its defense capabilities, Germany and other European nations are reorganizing their military strategies. To reinforce advanced weapons systems such as tanks, self-propelled artillery, armored vehicles, and drones, demand for high-strength armor plates, heat-resistant superalloys, and defense-grade titanium alloys is rising sharply.
However, Europe’s heavy reliance on countries like China and the U.S. for the supply and refining of these critical materials has exposed major weaknesses in its strategic metal supply chain.
Germany Focuses on Recycling and Domestic Alloy Production
Defense steel plates—used in tanks and armored vehicles—must endure bullets and blasts. These plates are made from alloy steels containing nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and manganese, valued for their hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Despite soaring demand, Europe still depends heavily on imported core alloy elements.
In response, the German government has launched a federal defense fund aimed at boosting production of core materials. Investments are increasing in R&D to domesticate high-strength armor plates and heat-resistant alloys such as Inconel and Hastelloy, used in aircraft and rocket components.
Recycling is also taking center stage. Germany is building a closed-loop system for titanium, nickel, and molybdenum scrap to secure material independence and support carbon neutrality goals. Recycling not only reduces import reliance but also strengthens sustainability in the alloy supply chain.
Titanium’s Role in Defense and the Push for Recycling
Beta titanium alloys, known for high strength and lightness, are being applied in self-propelled guns, bulletproof armor, and drone components. Titanium’s superior mobility and rigidity offer a tactical edge in modern battlefields. Yet, Europe’s low self-sufficiency in titanium ore and limited high-purity refining capacity remain significant hurdles.
To address this, Germany and EU partners are exploring titanium scrap recycling and value-added alloy production. Encouragingly, advanced metal recovery technologies are evolving into key differentiators for European defense firms.
South Korea faces similar challenges. Germany’s case suggests a roadmap for Korean firms to invest in strategic metal recycling, high-value alloy processing, and joint international development of core materials. The defense and aerospace sectors will continue driving demand for superalloys, particularly in high-temperature and mobility-critical environments.
