Ukraine’s Rare Metal Reserves Attract U.S. Attention

With the war between Ukraine and Russia nearing its end, U.S. President Donald Trump has made his interest in Ukraine’s mineral resources clear. His goal is to secure access to vital rare metals such as lithium, titanium, and graphite, all essential for national security and high-tech industries.


Ukraine holds considerable reserves of ilmenite and rutile, which are key titanium ores. Although it does not yet produce high-purity titanium sponge, its raw materials are crucial to the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors. The U.S. aims to reduce dependence on Chinese rare earth processing by developing Ukraine’s resources. However, this effort must include the capacity to refine and process titanium domestically, a critical step in maintaining supply chain security.


Dong-A Special Metals Powers Domestic Titanium Recycling

Titanium is a rare metal with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. These properties make it essential in aircraft engines, medical devices, and automotive parts. However, pure titanium is rarely found in nature and is usually produced via the Kroll process, which converts titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄) into titanium sponge using magnesium or sodium.


At Dong-A Special Metals, we go beyond traditional methods. Using plasma equipment and advanced alloy processing technologies, we have succeeded in mass-producing high-quality titanium ingots entirely from recycled scrap. Our flagship products include:

  • Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) and

  • Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) titanium ingots,

each sized at 230mm by 3,000mm.


These ingots are transformed into rods and wire rods, which are then supplied to various domestic and international industries. This end-to-end in-house recycling process significantly reduces carbon emissions and promotes resource circulation.


Recycling: A New Path to Carbon Neutrality

While the U.S. and Europe already recycle over 90% of rare metal scraps, Korea still imports most of its titanium sponge from China and Russia. This reliance contradicts global carbon neutrality goals. Dong-A Special Metals is changing that narrative.


We have transferred technology from abroad to process titanium scrap into ingots and plan to expand into other high melting point metal alloys such as Inconel 625 and Inconel 718. By utilizing existing scrap, we reduce reliance on imports and support Korea’s strategic materials independence.
