What Is IN 800 (Incoloy 800)?

IN 800, commercially known as Incoloy 800, is a high-temperature structural alloy made primarily of nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and chromium (Cr). Typically, the alloy contains 30–35% nickel, 20–23% chromium, and the balance is mainly iron. Small amounts of aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti) are added to enhance oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength.

This alloy is renowned for its mechanical stability under elevated temperatures and its ability to resist oxidation and erosion, making it ideal for long-term use in extreme thermal environments.


Outstanding High-Temperature and Oxidation Resistance

The most critical property of IN 800 is its exceptional resistance to oxidation in the temperature range of 650°C to 1100°C. This resistance is due to its high chromium content, which forms a stable Cr₂O₃ (chromium oxide) protective film on the surface.

This oxide layer protects the alloy’s mechanical integrity during prolonged high-temperature exposure, ensuring long-term durability in harsh environments.


Structural and Thermal Stability

IN 800 also shows excellent intergranular corrosion resistance, even after extended periods of high-temperature operation. It maintains structural integrity under high tensile stress and creep, making it a reliable thermal fatigue-resistant material.

Its thermal shock resistance—the ability to relax stress during repeated temperature fluctuations—reduces fatigue failure in metal components exposed to cyclic heating and cooling.

Although harder to machine than conventional stainless steels due to its high hardness, IN 800 can still be precision machined using proper tools and cooling methods. This makes it ideal for fabricating complex structural components required in advanced thermal systems.


High Recycling Value and Environmental Impact

IN 800 is a nickel-chromium high-performance alloy, giving it significant recycling value. Scrap is commonly recovered from:

- Decommissioned high-temperature equipment

- Heat treatment systems

- Petrochemical and energy facilities

The recycling process—which includes sorting, analysis, and remelting—helps reduce production costs and supports resource circulation.

Because both nickel and chromium are expensive to refine, recycled IN 800 scrap plays a crucial role in creating a sustainable supply chain. Many advanced economies, such as the U.S., Japan, and EU countries, have recovery rates exceeding 80% for IN 800 alloys.
