IN 825 (Incoloy 825)

Incoloy 825, also known as IN 825, is a high-performance nickel-based austenitic alloy developed for superior corrosion resistance in harsh chemical environments. Composed primarily of nickel (Ni), it also includes iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), copper (Cu), and titanium (Ti). This alloy is widely recognized for its exceptional resistance to both oxidizing and reducing agents.


Excellent Resistance in Redox Environments

Incoloy 825 is designed to resist a wide range of aggressive corrosive media. It performs exceptionally well in environments containing hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄), and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). This resistance is largely due to:

- Nickel (38–46%): Protects against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.

- Chromium (19–23.5%): Forms a stable oxide layer that resists oxidation.

- Molybdenum (2.5–3.5%) and Copper (1.5–3%): Enhance resistance to acid corrosion.

- Titanium: Helps prevent intergranular corrosion and improves mechanical strength.


Mechanical Properties and Heat Resistance

Incoloy 825 maintains strong mechanical properties, even under prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures:

- Tensile Strength: 550–690 MPa

- Yield Strength: 220–350 MPa

- Operating Temperature: Up to ~540°C

It also exhibits excellent stress relaxation, thermal shock resistance, and creep strength, making it suitable for long-term high-temperature applications.


Easy Fabrication and Welding Flexibility

IN 825 is highly machinable and can be manufactured into tubes, plates, rods, pipes, and fittings. Thanks to its excellent weldability, it supports:

- Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding

- Shielded metal arc welding

- Metal inert gas (MIG) welding

Even after welding, the material retains uniform strength and structure with minimal post-weld heat treatment, making it ideal for chemical processing plants, offshore platforms, and nuclear facilities.


Industrial Applications of Incoloy 825

Due to its exceptional performance, IN 825 is extensively used in:

- Chemical processing equipment

- Oil and gas industry (ANSI/NACE MR0175 compliant)

- Nuclear fuel reprocessing

- Seawater cooling systems

High Recycling Value of IN 825 Scrap

Incoloy 825 is not only a high-performance alloy but also a highly recyclable material. Its scrap is a valuable source of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium, all of which are strategic metals with high market value. Common sources of scrap include:

- Used heat exchanger tubing

- Dismantled reactor components

- Offshore structural elements

- Waste process equipment from chemical plants

Collected scrap is analyzed for composition and refined through vacuum melting or electroslag remelting (ESR). This ensures the efficient recovery of high-purity metals, contributing to carbon neutrality and resource circularity.
