High-Purity Metal Targets Powering Advanced Thin-Film Deposition
With the expansion of next-generation display technologies such as OLED, QD-OLED, and Micro LED, the demand for high-purity metal targets is rising rapidly. These materials are essential in physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes for forming ultra-thin, high-precision metal films on display substrates and wafers.
Ruthenium (Ru) and tantalum (Ta) are at the forefront of this trend. Their excellent electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and adhesion properties make them ideal materials for thin-film deposition in both display and semiconductor applications. As these industries advance, the strategic value of ruthenium and tantalum continues to grow.
Ruthenium, a platinum group metal, is widely used as an electrode and wiring material. It retains its performance under high-temperature processes. Tantalum, with a melting point near 3,000°C, delivers strong oxidation resistance and thermal conductivity, especially in thin-film transistors (TFTs).
PVD Targets for High-Performance Displays
PVD is a vacuum-based process where ions bombard a solid metal target, producing a thin, uniform metal layer on a substrate. For reliable performance, the metal target must have over 99.95% purity, fine grain size, and consistent density. Ruthenium and tantalum targets demand high-precision machining to ensure accurate deposition of ultra-fine circuits.
The booming demand for OLED and QLED displays in smartphones, tablets, and 4K/8K TVs is fueling increased consumption of these rare metals. Ruthenium serves as a transparent electrode or oxide layer. Tantalum is crucial in wiring and protective coatings, enabling low-power, high-resolution displays.
Beyond electronics, ruthenium catalysts are vital in industries like ammonia cracking, fuel cells, hydrogen production, and polymerization. Due to its reaction selectivity and electrochemical stability, ruthenium is central to emerging green hydrogen technologies such as water electrolysis.
However, sourcing these materials poses challenges. Ruthenium is mostly mined in South Africa and Russia, while tantalum often originates from conflict regions like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. These geopolitical factors raise supply chain risks and price volatility, especially for countries relying on imports.
Dong-A Special Metals' Role in Localization and Recycling
Dong-A Special Metals has developed a vertical process line from scrap collection to refining, alloying, rolling, and PVD target fabrication. The company specializes in forming and processing high-melting-point metals like ruthenium and tantalum.
By localizing the production of high-functional PVD target materials, Dong-A Special Metals reduces reliance on imports and strengthens the domestic supply chain. Its expertise in rare metal recycling and precision target fabrication supports Korea’s display and semiconductor competitiveness in the global market.
