Critical Role of Platinum Group Metals in Future Industries

Platinum group metals (PGMs)—including platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh)—are vital to advanced technologies. Korea’s PGM Recycling Gap and the Urgent Call to Action

Currently, large volumes of PGMs are used in Korean industries—especially in automotive catalytic converters, electronics, and fine chemical processes. Despite this, the country lacks a proper recycling system. Most used PGMs are either imported or incinerated due to insufficient sorting and refining infrastructure.

This results in a shockingly low recovery rate of rare metals. A strategic response is essential. Korea must establish an ecosystem for waste collection, sorting, and high-purity refining. In particular, the recovery of waste catalysts and discarded precision components must become a national priority.

To shape the future of the industry, Korea must focus on three core strategies: stabilizing the supply chain, advancing recycling technologies, and developing material alternatives.
