Introduction
Titanium plays a vital role in high-tech industries such as aerospace, offshore plants, semiconductor equipment, and medical devices. Its demand continues to surge due to its superior strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight properties. However, Korea heavily depends on titanium imports from countries like China, Russia, and Japan. This dependence makes the country vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical instability.
Domestic Titanium Recycling Technologies on the Rise
To strengthen supply chain security, Korea is now focusing on domestic recycling of high-purity titanium. National universities, research institutes, and specialized private companies are developing innovative recovery technologies. These include deoxidation and denitrification processes that reduce impurity content below 0.1%, allowing scrap titanium from aerospace and medical manufacturing to be reused.
Vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and electron beam melting (EBM) are key processes gaining traction. These technologies melt titanium scrap in a vacuum or inert gas environment, minimizing contamination by oxygen or nitrogen. As a result, they produce titanium ingots of commercial or even superior quality. Clean recovery processes in low-oxygen, low-nitrogen environments are emerging as core enablers for this transformation.
Advanced Recycling Process: From Sorting to High-Purity Ingot
The titanium recycling process begins with careful scrap sorting. Scrap is classified as commercially pure titanium (CP), alloyed titanium (such as Ti-6Al-4V), titanium oxide, or contaminated scrap. Accurate separation is essential to achieving high-quality regeneration.
Next is pretreatment: scrap undergoes cutting, degreasing, surface cleaning, and contaminant removal. Only then can it proceed to VAR or EBM melting, where it is remanufactured into high-purity ingots. These ingots are subsequently tested and graded for market readiness. High-grade ingots are used in aerospace and medical applications, while others serve general industrial needs.
Toward a Closed-Loop Titanium Economy
To meet rising domestic demand in aviation, defense, semiconductor, and medical sectors, Korea must reduce its raw material import reliance. A closed-loop recycling system using high-purity titanium scrap is essential. Collaboration across industries is also necessary to establish a stable scrap collection, refining, and remanufacturing system.
Dong-A Special Metals leads this shift with advanced surface treatment and high-quality titanium recovery solutions. By supplying remanufactured titanium alloys, we support Korea's resource independence and promote sustainable industrial growth.
