Building a Self-Sufficient Titanium Supply Chain in Korea
Titanium is a lightweight, high-strength, and corrosion-resistant metal essential for high-tech industries. Its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and durability make it indispensable in aerospace, marine, defense, semiconductor, and medical sectors. As a strategic material, titanium plays a vital role in applications that demand performance in acidic and salt-laden environments.
However, Korea still heavily relies on imports for most of its titanium sponge and alloy materials. Key suppliers include the United States, Russia, Japan, and China. This dependence exposes Korea to export restrictions, geopolitical tensions, and price volatility. It also weakens the long-term competitiveness of domestic strategic industries.
To address these issues, Korea has initiated localization strategies to establish a self-reliant titanium value chain. Domestic leaders such as POSCO, Korea Titanium, and the Korea Institute of Materials Science and Technology (KIMS) are spearheading this effort. Their goals include:
- Producing titanium sponge through domestic test production
- Developing high-purity refining technologies
- Advancing forging and rolling techniques for alloy manufacturing
These initiatives are especially focused on Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) and Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23), which are crucial for aircraft structures and medical implants, respectively.
The Role of Recycling in Titanium Sustainability
Developing local titanium production is not just about technology. It requires a full-cycle supply chain, from ore procurement and alloying to processing and recycling. A cluster-based production infrastructure is necessary to ensure stable output and strategic independence.
Another key pillar in Korea’s titanium strategy is the development of advanced recycling technologies. High-purity titanium can be recovered from industrial scrap—such as dust, swarf, and sludge—through refined processes. This not only reduces import reliance but also supports carbon neutrality and ESG goals.
At Dong-A Special Metals, we specialize in recycling rare metals that are traditionally hard to reclaim. Using our proprietary surface treatment and alloying technologies, we transform titanium and alloy scrap into high-quality raw materials ready for remelting—no further alloying required. These materials are suitable for high-performance applications and can significantly cut procurement lead times.
We actively support the movement to reduce carbon emissions through eco-friendly recycling of titanium by-products. Steelmakers and advanced manufacturing industries are encouraged to adopt more recycled materials for sustainable growth.
