EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

As global climate regulations tighten, carbon emissions from the metal manufacturing industry have become a major issue. Not just steel and aluminum, but also nickel, titanium, and molybdenum generate high levels of CO₂ during high-temperature smelting and refining.

The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) now applies not only to internal emissions but also to imported goods. This means that high-carbon metals face increasing regulatory pressure. Since the alloy materials industry has a large carbon footprint from raw materials to logistics, it may soon become a key target of CBAM expansion.

However, this shift offers a major opportunity for metal recycling companies. Scrap-based nickel, titanium, and cobalt alloys emit far less CO₂ than virgin refining methods. These alloys form the core of Dong-A Specialty Metals’ business. Because of their lower carbon intensity, they can be positioned as part of a low-carbon supply chain for European buyers.

Strategic Value of Scrap-Based Alloys Under CBAM

Alloy products such as Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel, and Ti-6Al-4V are small in volume but vital in performance. Yet the extraction and alloying of key elements like molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt involve high energy usage and sulfur dioxide emissions. CBAM evaluates not just direct emissions but also indirect ones — such as electricity used in processing and emissions during transportation.

This makes it necessary to track carbon emissions throughout the entire value chain — from elements to finished alloy. Companies that handle recycled titanium and nickel alloys, like Dong-A Specialty Metals, will gain an edge by offering low-carbon alternatives with traceable emissions.

Under CBAM, exporters must report product-specific emissions based on international standards like ISO 14067 and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA). Korean suppliers must prepare by building robust carbon tracking and reporting systems. Those who do will be more competitive in Europe.

Carbon Reporting and the Road Ahead for Korean Recyclers

European buyers increasingly prefer low-carbon and recycled-based metals to reduce supply chain carbon risks. This shift is growing, especially in the nickel and titanium market. In the long term, Korean companies must pursue low-carbon certifications and REACH compliance, or even consider LME Low Carbon programs.

Responding to CBAM is not a solo task. It demands collaboration between processors, exporters, and scrap suppliers. A domestic company that remanufactures titanium ingots, for example, must document its carbon footprint and share the data with European partners. This level of transparency will form a CBAM-compliant supply chain, giving exporters a competitive edge in Europe’s evolving metal market.

Dong-A Specialty Metals continues to lead in providing scrap-based alloy solutions that meet emerging environmental standards. In a regulatory landscape shaped by CBAM, recycling-based metals are not just sustainable — they are strategic.
