Monel 400

What is Monel 400?

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy, primarily composed of 63% nickel and 28–34% copper, with trace elements such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and carbon (C). This unique composition gives it excellent corrosion resistance across a wide range of environments—including seawater, acids, bases, and oxidizing-reducing conditions.


Key Properties of Monel 400

  • Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional in marine environments and resistant to sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and chloride salts.

  • Mechanical Strength: Maintains strength and toughness across a wide temperature range, up to 900°F (480°C).

  • Cold Workability: Easily formed without heat treatment, offering good ductility and toughness.

  • Machinability: Slightly more challenging than other nickel alloys, but manageable with proper equipment.


Application Areas

Due to these properties, Monel 400 is widely used in:

  • Heat exchangers and condensers

  • Pumps and valves in marine equipment

  • Oil and gas pipelines

  • Chemical processing equipment


Monel 400 vs. Monel K-500

While both are nickel-copper alloys, Monel K-500 includes aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti), making it precipitation-hardenable. This gives K-500:

  • Higher strength and hardness

  • Better wear resistance

  • Suitability for high-stress environments


In contrast, Monel 400 offers:

  • Superior general-purpose corrosion resistance

  • Easier machinability

  • No need for heat treatment
